The Team
THE INNOVATORS
Sling Cycles is a division of Sling Aircraft and the two work closely together. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Sling Aircraft employees cycle the 37 km Sling Trail at 15h00 pm.
At the core of Sling Cycles, however, are James Pitman and Branko Brkljac – Chairman and Chief Bicycle Designer.
SLING CYCLES TEAM

Branko Brkljac
Born and raised in Serbia, Branko has been riding bicycles for as long as he can remember. As a child in communist Yugoslavia, he and his friends would ride out for days, crossing districts and provincial borders, camping out on strangers’ land.
With his natural spirit of adventure and love of the outdoors, Branko joined the Serbian Secret Service, later becoming a member of the national Special Operations Unit and eventually the civil Police Force. During work breaks, he spent time travelling across the Balkans, pursuing his passions for fishing, cycling and of course aviation.
In the early 80’s Branko, together with a group of his friends, organized and rode the first MTB race in Serbia, as well as the first MTB marathon. Much of his recreational riding took place on mixed surfaces, shifting from tar to gravel, sand and rock, even back in the 1980’s. Some years later, while others were on their bicycles riding, Branko was busy cutting the wheels on his 26” Specialized Epic SWORKS, converting them to 29”, seeking to make a better and faster machine of his own.
In 2009, Branko moved to Botswana, where he spent 6 months on contract. It was here that he met his wife Yvonne, a Zulu from KwaZulu Natal, and in 2010 the two relocated to his new home in South-Africa. In the intervening years Branko has worked as Production Manager at Wagtail Aviation and Sub-Assembly, Production and Store Manager at Sling Aircraft. Branko’s passion for bicycles, however, did not wane and during his post-lockdown rides with his colleague, James Pitman, Sling Cycles was born.
Branko considers his role as Manager and Chief Bicycle Designer at Sling Cycles to be his most exciting career development to date and he can’t wait to contribute to the improvement of humanity through making available intelligent, versatile, beautiful, tough and practical bicycles, starting with the Sling Cycles Tagati!

James Pitman
James, a farm boy from KwaZulu Natal, is in a constant state of exploration. A veteran of numerous educational institutions, travels and careers, he’s still looking for the best answers to all the big questions.
Following his law degree and a year-long truck journey from Cape Town to London (see Malachite – A Journey Through Africa), James spent some years navigating his way up the legal ladder. In 2001 he took a year off to read and think – which he did from a shack in Greece and on the roadside in India, Nepal and onward to Egypt, a route he traversed on a 20 year old Royal Enfield motorcycle.
Following a return to law, in 2006 James joined a mining exploration business, which made good, enough for him to join his friend and fellow adventurer Mike Blyth in the development of a new aircraft – the beautiful Airplane Factory Sling. (For an early climbing adventure with Mike, James and their friend, Marianne, see No Need for Parking – An African Rock Adventure).
Following various adventures, the greatest of which is no doubt the development of the Sling Aircraft business itself, James continues to be driven by the desire to make beautiful machines which improve the lives of their owners. His love of adventure, the outdoors, sport and travel have made cycling an ongoing theme. The opportunity to develop and ride fine bicycles in the context of an aircraft development business is just too good an opportunity to pass up. James already has more than 2,500 km under his belt on his prototype, belt driven, 14 speed, Kindernay ‘rear hub’ internal gear system and he says he’s not making any changes soon.
For a look at some of James’ aviation adventures, see Around the World in 40 Days and Wild Landings Namibia. His next adventure, he promises, will be on a Sling bicycle.
